Top Five Benefits of Using Statistics Everyday

Top Five Benefits of Using Statistics Everyday The Power of Statistical Data Analysis ChaptersInference and Probability in Daily LifeLearn About Your Economy In-DepthHow to Use Statistics to Improve Everyday LifeHave Fun Learning StatisticsLearning and using statistics can be challenging, especially as the amount of data we have only continues to skyrocket. In the last two years alone, 90% of the world's data has been created, and this pace is showing no signs of slowing down. Quite the opposite: looking at the rate of data created each minute in the world, we find that 46,740 pictures are posted on Instagram and 16 million texts are sent. It’s no wonder that fields like big data analytics and data science have seen an unstoppable growth in the job market. This is why it is important to not only understand the different skill sets needed in data analysis but how we these skills in statistical analysis everyday to enrich our lives.Reporting on daily life, such as stocks and the weather, involve statisticsonline statistics course. If you’re really curious about the theoretical and computational aspect of Bayesian probability, you’ll just need a little bit of mathematics. However, the most important thing to take away from this theorem is what it emphasizes about the goal of statistics as a discipline: to find patterns and using these patterns to predict. These predictions are told by statistical data you hear in everyday life, predictions that are used to ameliorate daily life. Some examples are:Weather reportsFinancial marketsPharmaceuticalsYou don’t have to be a statistician or a researcher to analyze the weather reporting you hear every day. The framework of these kinds of reports are formed by hypothesis testing, statistical software, and of course many datasets. Statistical inference is used in this particular way in order to find patterns on weather data from the previous years, analyze this data, and use statistical methods to inform decision making.Whether you know it or not, deciding your outfit choices every day mimic statisticia ns and their methodology in creating weather reports. Individuals, without looking at these reports, still use the power of prediction to estimate what the weather will be like today based on the weather yesterday.Statistics and mathematical analytics is also used to analyze the financial markets around the world. In order to decide whether to invest in certain stocks, individuals utilize business statistics and accounting in order to analyze and make use of financial data. This is used by large organizations and governments as well, using the power of estimation in statistics to make decisions on how to invest. Many branches of the economy same method is also applied to understanding unemployment statistics, census statistics across all demographics, and government statistics.Next time you purchase over-the-counter medicine or receive prescribed medicine, remember that pharmaceuticals also benefit from quantitative data analysis. There are a variety of statistical methods that are a pplied towards trials for new drugs, including conducting surveys, sampling populations, and forming hypotheses. This makes up an important branch of statistics, bio-statistics, which analyze the data from these trials to be able to investigate their effects. Decision making is especially powerful in terms of deciding whether or not new medicine should be brought to the public. If you're interested in knowing more about the importance of studying data science course, pay attention to how much data you take in everyday - from newspapers to your favorite apps!Learn About Your Economy In-DepthIf you listen to or watch the news daily, or have a favourite journal you turn to to get your information, chances are you read about statistics daily. This is because of one of the most important cross-disciplinary subjects involving statistics: econometrics. This mix of economics and statistics strives to use economic data in modelling future economic policy decisions in governments and banks. At t he core of econometrics is economic data, which is used daily in the news and can range from agricultural and census data to a country’s budget information. These measurements of growth include variables such as income statements, dietary consumption, tax information, graduation rates â€" all utilized as a sort of statistical consulting that predicts what the economic future will look like. The importance in understanding the basics in econometrics is that it has deep social ramifications. In the UK, for example, people use econometrics when making decisions on this years budget for government spending.Forecasting political and economic trends is importantAnother way you can see econometrics at work is looking at how certain government associations decide the policies on health, using data such as weight, income and diet in order to help make decisions regarding food products made or entering the UK. What this means is that statistical, economic analysis heavily effects political a nd fiscal decisions within the government and individuals.Understanding how economics and statistics inform governments can, most importantly, help you understand your economic situation during financial crises. In the recent economic crisis, for example, it was critical for those affected to understand the policies issued by the government in response could either ameliorate or threaten your household. How to Use Statistics to Improve Everyday LifeIf you’ve ever used an app or device to help you manage your life, it is most likely that you are using statistics. The physical and financial benefits of using statistics can be found in the helpful analysis of your own personal data which, using apps like Runkeeper and Mint, make this analysis simple. For example, many people will often want to make a lifestyle change and become more healthy, which becomes most apparent around New Years. However, studies have shown that having an application on your device that is geared towards an acti ve lifestyle can help you keep resolutions related to your health. This means that, using your own data, you can track your progression on helpful apps like running, yoga, and walking apps that will help you attain your goals. This also applies to people striving for a healthier lifestyle. Healthy eating apps, like apps that provide you with a plethora of wholesome recipes, have exploded. These apps don’t just include meal plans and healthy recipe guides, but also apps that keep track of dietary information in order to help you loose, gain or maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. Utilizing statistics in this way shows how decision making based on own personal data can ameliorate physical and mental health.Analytical apps can help you achieve your goalsBudgeting apps have also proved extremely useful when trying to make an important change. These apps utilize individuals’ financial and bank information, keep track of your expenses, and can help you analyze the patterns in your spending. This can be particularly handy when making decisions on what to spend during the month or year. However, these kinds of analyses can be even more impactful when trying to identify unhealthy spending behaviour. For example, if your budgeting app lets you see that each month you are spending 20% of your income on shopping, and know that at the end of the month you never have money for food, you can make a decision based on this information in order to create healthier spending habits.Have Fun Learning StatisticsUsing statistics isn’t limited to being used for improving and individual’s own personal life â€" it can also help simply because it lets you understand the world around you. Statistics is being used more and more to inform business decisions, politics, and the people around you - understand the ways in which it does so can help you come to more informed decisions about society. It’s also incredibly fun to learn, especially when it comes to wacky statistics like the fact that the amount of alcohol consumed in the US in 2006 was enough to fill Wembley Stadium five times!Statistics can also be wielded to shed new light on ideas you’ve already formed about other people, countries and societies. For example, many people are under the impression that people who don’t graduate and end up in destitute positions should carry the blame of their decisions. However, after looking up why exactly people from poorer areas don’t graduate at the same rates as wealthier socio-economic regions, you will be able to challenge the ways in which you have formed your opinions. The statistics learnt from a good data science course, in other words, can give you a peek at the bigger picture in situations you'd like to learn more about. This captures the most important aspect of statistics, which is that learning about it and how it affects our lives leads to questioning the world around you in positive ways. Questioning the world around us will always lead to ne w knowledge gained and expand the ways in which we traditionally think. It is important to remember that data mostly always goes through an interpreter - which can be anything from a data scientist, a data visualization, a report, a memo. Interpreters are always biased, whether that be for the company they work for, government, or their own personal biases. No matter how hard they interpreters try not to be, it is imperative to always take statistics with a grain of salt. After all, how many times have you made a decision based on the weather only to be caught, unprepared, in a rain that wasn’t predicted. If you're interested in learning more between the differences within statistics and data science, check out this guide!

Best Ways to Use Facebook as a College Student

Best Ways to Use Facebook as a College Student pexels.com Facebook Groups Facebook is all about being social, making connections, and networking. So why not have a meeting of the minds with people interested in the same things as you? There are millions of Facebook groups out there that can be tailored to exactly what you might be interested in. You can connect with people in your area, with people from your school, with those interested in the same extracurricular activities, and more! You can stay up to date with the latest trends in that field or area with conveniently placed threads from the group popping up through your newsfeed. If that is too much for you, you can change your notification settings or how the information from the group pops up in your everyday timeline. You can set it so that you only learn what is going on in the group if you decide to go directly to the group’s page. It is up to you. Whatever you are looking for, though to have a dialogue, to meet new people, to advertise yourself Facebook groups can be a great way to do it. Do you have events you want to advertise? Why not join groups that are filled with people that are interested in those kinds of events and share it with them? It could be just what they are looking for too. Not sure what classes to take? Why not join a student group of your peers who have been grappling with the same decisions for advice? You never know who or what you might stumble upon to help you move forward. pexels.com Business Pages If there is something you do or something you want to help advertise, it can be really beneficial to make a Facebook page for it! I am not talking about a page for memes or something, though it needs to be something that can really help your career (unless creating a page for memes can somehow help you). Do you have an organization that you want to help become more widely known? You can make it a business page, whether it is for a student organization you are a part of or a business that you work for or own. Creating a page does not cost money (unless you choose to pay for ads) and it creates a direct link between you and the audience you either have or want to have. You can help it to branch out and connect with the people who are interested and want to support your work as well as getting the word out about what exactly it is that you are doing. If you want to market yourself, you can create a professional business page for yourself that keeps people in the loop about what you are doing professionally. That way you can avoid feeling like you are bragging on your personal page and can help create a distance between your professional and social lives. Announcements Milestones You often have a great network of peers and friends at your disposal on Facebook. But is everyone aware of what you have been up to? Of course not! You cannot expect everyone in your Facebook network to know exactly what you are doing and what you plan to do. But without knowing that, how can they be involved or support you? Whether or not it feels like bragging, you can certainly let your friends on Facebook know when you have accomplished something or hit a milestone. Just got a job that you are really excited about? Post about it. Just got awarded a grant for a research project? Share the details of what you are working on. Super passionate about a cause? Do not be afraid to share who you are, what you are doing, and what you stand for loud and proud. Or, if you do not feel comfortable making a post, you can create a milestone event. That way even in the future, you can track and look back at all the great accomplishments you made and when.

Learning, Translated 5 Steps to Kindle Language Learning

Learning, Translated 5 Steps to Kindle Language Learning Learning, Translated: 5 Steps to Kindle Language Learning Sitting on a beach or in a coffee shop in some far-flung place. Showing everyone how interesting you are by reading Camus or Cervantes or Murakami in the original language.Isnt it a beautiful image?Of course, the actual experience of trying to read books in a foreign language is not usually so beautiful. My early attempts to read in my target language meant a novel propped open with one hand and a dictionary with the other. It was slow and difficult. In the end, I  gave up.Thanks to modern tech such as the overlord of e-book readers, the Amazon Kindle, such tribulations are no longer necessary. The Kindle certainly has its haters among the literarily inclined, who prefer the feel and smell of a real paper-and-ink book. But love it or hate it, theres no denying that the Kindle is a fantastic tool for polyglot bookworms.Unlike with those early attempts and flicking back and forth with a reference book, the power to define and translate new vocabulary is, literally, in the palm of your ha nd. Whats the Big Idea? What You Need to Know About Kindles Translation FeatureThe first thing to note about Kindles translation feature is that  it only works with certain models of the Kindleâ€"specifically ones with a touch screen, like the Paperwhite or Kindle Fire. These offer the opportunity to see the definition of words while youre reading simply by holding your finger on the word you want to look up, provided you have the correct dictionary installed. There are Kindle-friendly monolingual dictionaries in many languages and bilingual dictionaries in common language pairs.Additionally, some versions of the Kindle will keep track of words youre learning for you, a feature that works great in conjunction with the FluentU Plus plan. FluentU takes real-world videosâ€"like movie trailers, music videos, news and inspiring talksâ€"and turns them into personalized language lessons. With the Plus plan, you can create custom multimedia flashcard sets with your Kindle vocab lists in an instant: All you need to do is type the words in.There are some limitations to Kindles translation abilitiesâ€"for example, you can only translate single words rather than longer idioms and phrasesâ€"but the Kindle is a powerful tool to get reading in your target language. Lets take a look at how.Learning, Translated: 5 Steps to Kindle Language Learning1. Make sure you have the correct dictionary installed. The first thing you need to do is to choose the appropriate dictionary for your language learning. If youre early in your language learning, a bilingual dictionary might be most appropriate to give you the direct translation of words. If youre a more advanced learner, its better to use a monolingual dictionary and translate yourself. Not sure how to find a dictionary or get started? This post will have you set up with your new Kindle dictionary before you know it.2. Select your reading material. Here are some key tips and things to know when selecting your reading material:As ever with choosing learning materials, make sure you choose material of an appropriate grade. Its tempting to try the challenge of jumping into a novel like Ulysses, but a surefire way of making yourself give up is to select something too tricky! If you search on Amazon for graded reader in your target language, youll see some options for language learners of different levels. These are particularly useful if youre still in the early stages of learning a language and would feel more comfortable with something targeted at beginners.Remember that a genre like literary fiction is likely to have complex vocabulary and metaphorical expressions that can be particularly difficult to work out. If youre still an intermediate reader, consider non-fiction genres like biographies, where texts are likely to be more direct and descriptive.Choose something you would be interested in in your first language. If you have to spend weeks translating a sci-fi novel when you only read romance, it wont be rewar ding for you. There are plenty of options for free texts on the Amazon site. Simply use the check boxes on the left-hand side in the Kindle Store to select the language you want and then sort by price from lowest to highest. Usually these texts are ones that have been around for long enough to be exempt from copyright laws, so just be aware that the language may not be as up-to-date as in a modern text.3. Start reading.Dont expect to understand every word right awayâ€"after all, theres a reason why youre practicing reading! It’s easy to get frustrated when there are key parts of the text that you dont fully understand, but its important to be patient. Reading to learn a language is naturally going to be more difficult than reading for pleasure in your mother tongue, but it will be all the more rewarding for that reason! So, when you first come to a word you dont know, try to understand it from context. Think about cognates or similarities to words youve seen before, and if that does nt help, then simply try to think of the things that would make sense in that place.Dont stop there. The more you interrupt your reading, the more disjointed it will feel and the easier it will be for you to get bored and want to stop. Read to the end of the sentence, paragraph or even page.Try to summarize to yourself the meaning of what you just read, then go back and read it again. This time, when you get to the unfamiliar word, tap on it to check the dictionary definition or translation into your language. Go back and re-read sentences and paragraphs to make sure you can translate them properly.4. Review! As we know, its all well and good to see new wordsâ€"but they arent going to stick just from seeing them once. Perhaps youre the type who, when reading in your target language, scribbles notes and translations all over the page. Kindle has a note-taking feature, but theres something you can do thats even better.A really handy feature for using your Kindle as a language learning t ool has been introduced for the Paperwhite: Vocabulary Builder. Heres how to use it:When you look a word up by placing your finger on it, its automatically added as a flashcard to your vocabulary list. When you want to review, just select the menu from any book and select Vocabulary Builder. Youll see a list of the words youve looked up.Scan the words and try to remember their meanings. Then click on each word to see the definition. You can also tap Usage to see the context it was used in when you looked it upâ€"the full sentence from the book. You can also work it the other way around. Tap Books at the top of the screen to see a list of books in which youve looked up words. You can then see the list of words you wanted to translate in that book. That means if you want to go over the vocabulary in the most recent book you read, its all there for you in one place. When you want to test yourself, tap Flashcards at the bottom. Youll be shown the words in your Vocabulary Builder in a rand om order, alongside the full sentence from the book you looked it up in. Try to remember the meaning and then check the definition to see if you were right. When you think youve fully learnt the word, you can click Mark as Mastered and the word will no longer appear as a flashcard. If your version of the Kindle doesnt have this feature, recreate it yourself. Keep a list of the words you had to look up and, at the end of each chapter you read, go over them again. If you cant remember the word, go back to the chapter, find it and use the context to remind yourself. You could even go so far as to create the flashcards for yourself!5. On to the next one.Its great how a Kindle shows you the progress youve made with your reading. Youll have a full shelf of foreign-language books in your pocket in no time.Happy reading! And One More ThingExcited to jump into language learning? Then youre going to love learning with FluentU!FluentU makes it possible to learn languages  from music videos, comm ercials, news and inspiring talks.  Its all stuff that native speakers  actually watch.  With FluentU, you learn real languagesâ€"the same way that natives  speak them. Tips From an Orange County Academic Tutor

Tips From an Orange County Academic Tutor Tips From an Orange County Academic Tutor: Tracking Progress for Optimism and Continued Success Many students work hour after hour and day after day only to feel like they just cant be good enough. Although this is a perfectly valid way to feel, students who track their improvement are much more likely to push themselves further academically with each passing term.                                   Think about this situation as if somebody is training for an athletic event but theyre never the winner, they may feel overwhelmed and simply give up. This is something that most people can relate to. However, if we realize that, although we weren’t first place, that we ran five minutes faster than our last race, or that our coach gave us more positive feedback than in the previous season, were more likely to stick with it. The same holds true with academic life (READ: 3 Tips for Consistency in Education). 1. Get a baseline Students who want to tract improvement should get a baseline for whatever subject they’re studying. A baseline is a simple way of knowing where a student started in the process of improvement. Examples include taking a practice SAT or ACT exam, providing a writing sample to a tutor, keeping a graded assignment from a teacher in a class that they’re struggling with, or anything that lets them know where they started. 2. Call an educational consultant Private tutors and educational consultants have been helping students track their progress as part of their job for years. Because the tutor can remain objective, which is harder for students and their parents, they can often remind their students how far theyve come, even if they havent reached their final goal. Its really important for students to discuss what their specific goals are with their tutor at the beginning of their sessions. If a student says that their ultimate goal is to maintain straight As, the tutor may be able to set interim goals such as getting up to a B+, and then an A-. 3. Consult with the classroom teacher Classroom teachers, of course, have grade sheets for every student for the last several years. If the student is feeling that they are not quite where they want to be at this point in the year, they’re advised to speak with their teacher and see how they were doing back in September. Students to find that they have significantly improved are more likely to continue on. Also, this alerts the teacher to the fact that they need a little extra encouragement (READ: Five Tips for Success in English Class). 4. Make a chart Students who have very specific feedback are more likely to realize how important their improvement has been. Its important to remember that improvement is not determined by great scores but also by small achievements. Students who consistently struggled with one particular issue, such as calculus, can make a chart that will help them specifically with calculus functions. If the student was only getting 6 out of 10 calculus problems right in September but they are now consistently getting 8 out of 10 correct, this is an improvement to be celebrated. It may not be enough to raise their grade in the class but it’s a personal achievement to be celebrated. 5. Ask a friend Students who need to track improvement in a specific area can ask a friend for help. After all, friends are usually supportive and non-judgmental. If a student needs to track something highly specific, such as punctuation, they can ask a proofreading minded classmate to take a look at a writing sample from today and a writing sample from six months ago. Receiving encouragement and positive feedback is always good when it comes from a respected friend. Students to do not feel comfortable asking their friends for this favor, can ask a relative who is currently in college or a private tutor for feedback (READ: the new SAT: its never too early to know the facts). So many students want to be perfect these days and its getting harder to be accepted to university. These issues can become very discouraging and prevent students from pursuing their dreams. Tracking small and specific improvements is a great way to stay positive and optimistic about a great educational future. Why I Hate Thanksgiving

Why I Hate Thanksgiving Photo via Flickr user pinksherbet Its always about this time of year, when the University of Denvers quarter comes to close right before Thanksgiving, that I become both a) extremely stressed and b) angry. Stressed because obviously, finals, but why angry? Because everyone starts talking about Thanksgiving and Christmas and the holiday spirit. Let me clarify that Thanksgiving is most definitely one of the worst holidays â€" and this is why. I first learned about Thanksgiving, not at home, but in school. I learned it was a time when the mysterious Indians showed up out of nowhere and helped the Pilgrims survive when they were unable to feed themselves, and in doing so, created a holiday which people celebrate to give thanks. We then, as 1st Graders, dressed up as Pilgrims and Indians and shared a finger-food Thanksgiving dinner. But what they didnt teach us was that many of the Puritan elite among these Pilgrims later turned against the Native Americans and burned their villages to the ground. This merely continued a history of violence against the Native Americans that had begun since the Spaniards first came to the Americas, a history that would continue for centuries, a history that has still left many Native American peoples as second-class citizens. One of the main reasons why I despise Thanksgiving is the way that the US seems to conveniently forget about this history. Why do we as US Citizens still celebrate Thanksgiving? To give thanks to the Native Americans? What if people, like me, never had ancestors in the United States at that time? And what are Native Americans expected to do â€" give thanks that they showed compassion to immigrants of whom many would later systemically commit genocide?  Do people sit down on Thanksgiving day and talk about the Trail of Tears? The racism still experienced by Native Americans today? The standard of living on reservations? No. Instead, people sit down with family members, watch a parade of Snoopy floats and lip-syncing celebrities and hours of football on TV, cook a big meal and fall into a collective food coma and conveniently call it a holiday to appreciate what we have. Photo via Flickr user eye of einstein We give thanks that we have food on the table by encouraging the mass annual commercial slaughtering of turkeys grown artificially and in poor conditions in order to meet the American demand, a custom which also basically flips the bird to any vegetarians or vegans. We give thanks by consuming and encouraging each other to consume huge quantities of food an average American Thanksgiving dinner is worth 2000 calories when there are still children in our US of A starving on the streets? But Thanksgiving brings family together!  If anything, a lot of people I know talk about how much of a chore Thanksgiving is, having to fly back home to see cranky relatives, taking time out of their precious 4-5 day weekend or their winter break to go endure some meaningless dinner that is exactly the same food, exactly the same conversations around the stove or the television every year. Moreover, some people are forced to work on Thanksgiving Day, unable to spend it with their families because those companies decided to make money from the last-minute grocery shoppers by denying their employees family time. My problem with Thanksgiving as a holiday stems not from the intent but from the action. Its all fine and dandy to gather together and appreciate things that we have, but Thanksgiving today doesnt have anything to do with that.  If Thanksgiving were less of a hypocrisy and more of an actual celebration of appreciation, then maybe it wouldnt be such a bad holiday. Maybe it could, not erase, but seek to heal the burns still left from centuries of history against Native Americans. However, until I stop seeing people claim to appreciate all these things they have in their lives then going the very next day to Black Friday (and dont get me started on that), I will keep having this discussion, year after year.

Crime Scene Chemistry Is a Qualified Skill

Crime Scene Chemistry Is a Qualified SkillCrime scene chemistry is the study of all the molecules, substances and chemicals that are found in a crime scene and how they affect each other. The mixture of toxic and non-toxic substances during the time of a crime or accident has the potential to harm other people. These substances will affect the victim, whether the victim was conscious of it or not.By being involved in a crime you could find yourself facing a death sentence. A crime scene chemical analysis will determine if any drugs were present. Forensic chemist must also be able to predict the amount of drug the victim ingested before death. This will help determine how long the victim would have been experiencing the symptoms associated with drug abuse.Body fluid analysis can be used to detect presence of any blood or other blood elements within the body. Drug paraphernalia analysis will show the type of drug (or substances) taken by the victim. Abductions will be determined using this method. Abduction victims have been found to have traces of tranquilizers, opium, benzodiazepines, and others. It has also been proven that forensic chemical analysis can help prevent the crime from happening. Many police agencies are using the same techniques and use the same techniques to help them identify victims. They are able to solve crimes because of these techniques.A common crime scene example is that of a home break-in. It takes a lot of time and resources to properly investigate a break-in. They need to locate, analyze, and test the residence in order to discover the true cause of the break-in. This may include the presence of specific drugs, weapons, and other items.Because of the importance of this crime scene evidence, most jurisdictions require every detective working on the case to undergo these specialized courses. These are usually taught by licensed professional counselors. Every crime scene and every crime must be treated differently. By being educated in th is process, officers will be more prepared to analyze and interpret crime scene chemicals and their effects on the victim. In summary, crime scene chemistry is used to predict where the victim's body might have been located, if he or she was alive, and what drugs or other items might have been in the area at the time of the crime. Detectives will be able to analyze these samples and test them to see if there are any drug overdoses or any other related problems that could have been caused by the crime.
